Senate To Vote On Bill Ending Pay For Teachers While Doing Union Work

Government and school districts would no longer have to foot the bill for leave time for employees to conduct union business, under legislation awaiting a vote in the state Senate.

Bill sponsor, Senate Republican Marty Knollenberg says the time off is a burden, especially for schools, which have to pay for the teacher’s leave and for someone to fill-in while the teacher is gone.

But Tim Hughes of the United Auto Workers (UAW) thinks it should be a two way street.

He says it doesn’t make sense to pay for one side of the table during contract negotiations and not pay for the other half.

The measure has cleared the Senate Education Committee.
