Michigan Unemployment Rises

Michigan’s unemployment rate is up for the first time September 2013.

State officials say the jobless rate in May increased by one-tenth of a percentage point to 5.5 percent, breaking a string of 20 consecutive months of rate reductions.

A spokesman says more people were looking for a job last month than is typical for May.

The number of unemployed workers increased by 7,000 while total employment increased by 4,000.

Michigan’s jobless rate last month was one and eight-tenths percentage points below the state’s May 2014 rate of 7.3 percent.

It was the second consecutive month that the state’s unemployment rate matched the national jobless rate which also increased by one-tenth of a percentage point to 5.5 percent in May.
