Hold Up on Same-Sex Marriage Ruling

Neither the state nor federal government are yet recognizing an estimated 300 same-sex marriages performed in Michigan before the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals stayed a ruling Saturday that threw out the state’s ban on same-sex marriage. A spokesperson for Governor Rick Snyder says the state is awaiting a decision from the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals and expects some guidance from the court on how to proceed with the marriages. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Justice says the department is closely monitoring the situation. U.S. district Judge Bernard Friedman overturned Michigan’s bans on gay marriage and same-sex adoption Friday, however the ruling was issued after most county clerks offices had closed for the day.
