High Risk of Fire in the U.P.

Dry, windy conditions are fueling a high risk of fire across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Celeste Chingwa, Rescue Protection Manager with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, says they’re averaging a fire a day in the U.P.

A few of the recent fires stemmed from campfires, others were caused by lightning and one – which is still under investigation – may have been caused by sparks from a passing train.

She says the chances of the smallest spark causing a fire is incredibly high, which is why the DNR won’t be approving any burn permits the next few days.
