Former NMU Student Facing Embezzlement

A former president of the Northern Michigan University student union is facing embezzlement charges. 34-year-old Amber Lopota of Port Huron faces a felony charge of embezzlement of between $1,000 and $20,000 and a misdemeanor count of embezzlement of less than $200. She allegedly embezzled from the Associated Students of Northern Michigan University while she was president. Lopota waived her preliminary examination in district court Thursday afternoon and has been bound over to Marquette County Circuit Court for trial June 3rd. According to Northern Michigan spokeswoman Cindy Paavola, Lopota was arrested in March and withdrew from the university last week. Her next scheduled court date is May 9th.
