Dems Propose tax Credits, Deductions to Help Middle Class Families

Democrats in the Michigan House and Senate are introducing a series of bills they say will help middle class families in the state.

One measure would create a per child tax credit for families making a combined $100,000 a year or less. Another would create a tax credit to help offset the cost of daycare if both parents are working.

Other proposed tax credits would help pay for home repairs and pay off college loans.

House Minority Leader Tim Greimel says the new tax credits and deductions would cost the state around $1 billion.

He says renegotiating MEGA tax credits should free up enough money to cover the cost but concedes it may not be enough.

Greimel says he also wouldn’t rule out a bump in the corporate income tax to cover the cost of the credits or pulling some money from the general fund.

A spokesman for the House Republicans calls the plan a ridiculous wish-list.
