Some Online Retailers Begin Collecting State Sales Tax

Michigan’s Main Street Fairness Act takes effect Thursday meaning some big online retailers will have to begin collecting state sales tax.

The act requires sales websites like Amazon, which have facilities in Michigan, to begin collecting the state’s 6% sales tax.

Tom Scott of the Michigan Retailers Association, which supported the requirement, says the new law will give the state’s retailers a more level playing field with out-of-state competition.

The state estimates the change is poised to bring in another $60 million in revenue.

Amazon would not comment on the change.
