Attorney Generals Office Offering Smart Donations Advice

The Michigan attorney general’s office is warning people to be careful when making charitable donations this holiday season.

The AG’s office has teamed up with charitable organizations to offer tips to Michigan donors to help ensure their financial gifts will do the most good and to avoid charity fraud.

Andrea Bitely of the AG’s office says this is the time of year people tend to be more charitable, so it’s important to take some precautions before mailing a check or giving over the phone.

She says donors should do their homework, do an internet search, and make sure the organization asking for contributions is legitimate.

Bitely says the AG’s office is making available a Giving Wisely handout that offers advice about making smart donations.

It’s available at www.michigan.gov/ag.
