A Michigan House committee is weighing legislation aimed at keeping Chronic Wasting Disease out of the state, and specifically out of the Upper Peninsula.
George Lindquist with the U.P. Whitetails Association says all it takes to spread the disease is a hunter bringing back a dead deer or elk infected with the disease from another state, cutting the carcass up and throwing it in the woods.
The measure would up the fine for bringing a deer or elk carcass into Michigan from a state where either animal is known to carry the disease.
Right now the fine is between $50 and $500. Under the bill it would increase to between $500 and $2,000.
The legislation was not voted on during a hearing Tuesday.
