Protecting Firearms Records

The State House has given final legislative approval to a package of bills protecting the privacy of firearms owners. The bills exempt firearms records from disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act. One of the sponsors says the private records of law-abiding residents who are practicing their Second Amendment rights should be protected from public exposure. Law enforcement officials will still have full access to firearms records in the course of their official duties, but the legislation requires a log be kept of who accessed the files and the reason for doing so. The measure now go to Governor Rick Snyder for his signature.
