Benishek Closes In On Retirement

For a fourth consecutive term, the U.P.’s voice in Washington will be a Republican.

Jack Bergman defeated Lon Johnson to become the first congressional district’s representative in D.C.

Bergman will be succeeding Dan Benishek, who decided to retire after three terms in office.

Benishek says he has had some ‘great conversations’ with Bergman the last couple of weeks.

The soon-to-be retired congressman believes that Bergman will do a great job for Northern Michigan.

“I’m excited that he has an administration that he can work with. I know that in Washington, the republicans are just giddy over the Trump Administration working together,” said Benishek. I was with (House Speaker) Paul Ryan and he is just so excited about getting legislation through the house. I know they’re really excited going forward in the new term.”

Bergman is already in D.C. preparing to take over for Benishek.

Last week, he was named class president during an orientation for freshman U.S. House members.
