Presentation Will Look At Way Around Electoral College

The Portage Lake District Library will host Barry Fink with the League of Women Voters of the Copper Country for a discussion about the electoral college and where it stands today on Thursday, December 8, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

The recent presidential election was the fifth time in our nation’s history that the popular vote winner was not the winner of the election.

The National Popular Vote Compact, which is a “way around” the electoral college, will be examined.

With this agreement, states sign a compact with each other to give all their electoral votes to the candidate with the most popular votes across the entire nation.

It goes into effect when states holding 270 electoral college votes have signed on.

States holding 165 votes have already signed the compact.

This presentation will take a closer look at the legality of the compact, what happens if states back out of it, and where Michigan stands with this.

Participants will be able to ask questions after the presentation.
