Calumet Hockey Blasts Houghton – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night, Calumet pounded Houghton 7-1. The Kings built a 4-0 lead in the first period. Jacob Kruse got one back for the Gremlins in the second, but the Kings responded with two quick goals, and added a final score as the period came to a close. The third period was scoreless. Rory Anderson and Gabe Coppo each had two goals and an assist for the Copper Kings. Nick Voelker stopped 24 shots in net to get the win for Calumet. Will Stier took the loss.

In boys basketball last night, Calumet smothered Baraga 71-25. Wyatt Loukus scored 24 for the Copper Kings.

In girls play last evening…
– Hancock cruised to a 43-30 victory over Ontonagon. The Bulldogs put the game away early, and led 18-5 after the first quarter. Maija Sebbas paced Hancock with 17 points. Isabelle Lutz had nine for the Gladiators.
– Calumet fell to Ishpeming 61-49. The Hematites broke the game open with an 18-0 run in the third quarter. Hailey Wickstrom finished 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Copper Kings. See video highlights of the game here.

For the second time this season, Michigan Tech’s Morgan Anderson has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Anderson scored 38 points in the Huskies’ victories over Hillsdale and Findlay last week.

Kyle Nystrom has been named as the new head football coach at Northern Michigan University. Nystrom has a long association with the NMU program – his father was an assistant coach for the Wildcats. He returns to Marquette from Big Rapids, where he was co-defensive coordinator for Ferris State University. He’s also coached at Central Michigan University and Western Michigan University. The Detroit Red Wings’ scoring troubles resurfaced last night, as they fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1. Anthony Mantha got Detroit’s only goal in the third period, when the game was already out of reach. Jimmy Howard gave up one goal before what appeared to be a leg injury forced him from the game early in the second period. Petr Mrazek replaced him. The Wings will visit the Florida Panthers Friday evening. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

After the game, the Wings announced that goalie Jared Coreau will be called up from Grand Rapids to fill in for Howard. There’s no word yet as to how serious Howard’s injury is.

The Detroit Pistons host the Memphis Grizzlies tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The NFL Pro Bowl teams were announced yesterday. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers earned his sixth selection. Safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and guard T.J. Lang will join him. No Detroit Lions were named to the team, but four were selected as reserves.  Punter Sam Martin and kicker Matt Prater were named first alternates. Quarterback Matthew Stafford and cornerback Darius Slay are second alternates.
