Court To Hear Motions In Yik Yak Lawsuit

A motions hearing is scheduled for today in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids concerning Michigan Tech’s decision to dismiss a student last year for a post on a social media site.

Norway, MI resident Matthew Schultz was a student at Michigan Tech until he was expelled for a post he made on Yik Yak in November of 2015 that appears to have been altered to read as a racially motivated threat.

Schultz was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor, which was later dismissed.

Back in September, Schultz announced he was suing the school for his expulsion.

Schultz is seeking $75,000 in damages from the university.

According to court documents, lawyers on behalf of Michigan Tech are seeking to have the lawsuit dismissed.

Today’s court hearing is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
