Kings Win HS Hockey Region; Huskies Advance to WCHA Semis – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
Nick Voelker stopped 28 shots, as Calumet blanked Houghton 4-0 to win the regional high school hockey title Saturday. Rory Anderson and Brent Loukus each scored goals in the opening five minutes of the first period and again in the third period. It’s the first regional title in six seasons for the Copper Kings, and it was Voelker’s fourth shutout in their past five games. Calumet will face Big Rapids in Wednesday night’s quarterfinal in Sault Ste. Marie. The Cardinals were forced to overtime against Alpena and won on a powerplay tally, 2-1. Our broadcast of the quarterfinal game will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

L’Esperance

The Michigan Tech hockey team punched its ticket to the semifinals of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament with a convincing 8-0 victory over Lake Superior State Saturday. Tech built a 3-0 lead through the first two periods, and then put the game away with five tallies in the third. Joel L’Esperance scored twice for the Huskies. Matt Roy had three assists. Angus Redmond made 16 saves to earn the shutout. Tech defeated the Lakers 6-4 on Friday, and won the best-of-three series two games to none.

Anderson
Monroe

Both MTU basketball teams ended their seasons in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference semifinals Saturday. The women’s squad fell to top-seeded Ashland 81-59. The game was close until late in the third period, when the Eagles began to stretch out their lead. Morgan Anderson and Lindsay Winter each scored 15 for the Huskies.

The men’s team lost to top-seeded Ferris State 79-71. It was a close game, with 13 lead changes, and 10 ties. Tech trailed by just two points with 40 seconds remaining, but the Bulldogs sank all six of their free throw attempts in the closing seconds to seal the victory. Kyle Monroe led the Huskies with 22 points.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team wraps up its Florida trip with games against Mount Ida College from Boston this morning, and the College of Saint Elizabeth from New Jersey this afternoon.

GLHL
The result of the Calumet Wolverines game against the Monroe Blues Saturday night was not reported.

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Marquette Mutineers 7-4 Saturday night, in a game was played at Meadowbrook Arena in L’Anse.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings fell 4-3 to the Edmonton Oilers Saturday night. Petr Mrazek made 34 saves, and took the loss. The Wings skate at Toronto Tuesday night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Caldwell-Pope

NBA
The Detroit Pistons recovered quickly from a slow start, and ripped the Philadelphia 76ers 136-106 Saturday night. Four Pistons scored at least 20 points, led by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope’s 26. Detroit will host the Chicago Bulls tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Sanchez

Anibal Sanchez’ struggles continued Saturday, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the New York Yankees 11-1 in Grapefruit League baseball. After Jordan Zimmermann opened the game with two scoreless innings, Sanchez gave up home runs in the third and fourth innings. He was charged with five runs.  The Tigers will face the Phillies this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Texas Rangers 7-1 in Cactus League play Saturday. Keon Broxton and Hernan Perez homered. The Brewers will face the Rockies this afternoon.

CopperDog 150
2011 champion Ross Fraboni still holds the lead after the second leg of the eighth annual CopperDog 150 dogsled race Saturday. After building a 12-minute lead while winning Friday’s opening stage, Fraboni saw that advantage slip to around seven minutes after a fifth-place finish in stage two. Anny Malo finished second in stage two, and remains in second position overall. Martha Schouweiler was Saturday’s top finisher, and moved from eighth place up to third overall.  Former champions Dennis LaBoda and Jake Golton are fourth and fifth. Among local mushers, Chad Grentz is 13th, Becky Bean is 14th, and Tom Bauer is 16th. The final leg of the 150 will begin this morning at 8:30 in Eagle Harbor, and end early this afternoon in Copper Harbor.

The two-stage CopperDog 80 will also conclude today. Alex LaPlante had the fastest time in the opening stage from Calumet to Eagle River Friday night. LaPlante is four-and-a-half minutes ahead of newcomer Jim Ward. Geri Minard, 15-year-old Tristan Rivest, and Lynne Witte round out the top five. Among local mushers, Jerry Trudell is seventh, and Susan Serafini is 11th. Kelly Jo Engle was unable to finish the first stage. Teams in the CopperDog 80 will follow the CopperDog 150 teams out of Copper Harbor this morning. Both races will end early this afternoon in downtown Calumet.
