Bill That Toughens Penalties For Assaulting Refs Head To Full Senate

People who attack a sports referee would face jail-time under legislation that was approved in a state Senate Committee Tuesday.

Among those testifying in support of the legislation was Kris Bienewicz of Livonia whose husband, John, died after being punched while refereeing a soccer game nearly three years ago.

The legislation calls for a maximum of five years for anyone who assaults a ref and causes serious injury.

The bill now goes to the full Senate for consideration.
