Quincy Smelter Tours Continue As Fall Begins

Chances to tour the Quincy Smelter are winding down for the season.

The next to last tour of the historic site for 2017 will take place this Saturday.

The tour offers a look into the Copper Country’s heritage, with breathtaking views of the surrounding hillsides and the Portage waterfront in Houghton and Hancock, as the fall colors just begin to appear across the landscape.

The smelter is a former industrial site for closed toe shoes are recommended.

The Quincy Smelter Works was built in the late 1800’s and was a key component of the copper mining industry.

During a time when copper from the Keweenaw was wiring the nation’s sprawling communications network, much of the raw material went through here.

Tours will run from 11am to 3pm Saturday and are sponsored by the Quincy Smelter Association.
