MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to the Tampa Bay Rays last night. All the scoring came in the ninth inning, after Jordan Zimmermann tossed seven scoreless frames for Detroit, and Jake Faria threw eight shutout innings for Tampa Bay. The Rays broke through with two home runs off Shane Greene in the top of the ninth. Detroit responded with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Nicholas Castellanos was stranded at third base when Dixon Machado ended the game with a ground out.

The Tigers host the Tampa Bay Rays again tonight. Matthew Boyd will pitch against Chris Archer. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has placed pitcher Daniel Norris on the disabled list. Norris left Sunday’s game with tightness in his groin. That’s a symptom of a larger issue he’s been dealing with since last season. Norris will undergo surgery to correct the problem, and will likely miss eight to 12 weeks. Chad Bell has been called up from Toledo to fill in.

The Milwaukee Brewers broke their four-game losing streak with a 6-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds last night. Manny Piña and Lorenzo Cain homered. Brandon Woodruff got the win in relief, after starter Jhoulys Chacín gave up four runs. The real pitching story was reliever Josh Hader. He pitched the final 2-2/3rds innings. He faced nine batters, walked one, and struck out the other eight. It’s the first time a major league pitcher has ever made an eight-out appearance, and recorded all eight outs with strikeouts.

The Brewers play at Cincinnati again tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Homer Bailey.
