Houghton “Flipping” For Summer

With spring finally here, the city of Houghton is getting ready for summer.

City Manager Eric Waara gave an update to the City Council at their regular meeting Wednesday on the progress the Public Works Department has been made in what he called getting “flipped” for summer weather.

The last couple of weeks have been busy ones for the department with work being done to repair water system breakdowns, working two shift sweeping, and assisting Portage Township with a water line break.

Crews are also working at Dee Stadium on the locker rooms. Waara said they are a little more than half done with the project.

The restrooms by the Portage Lake Lift Bridge are open and the restrooms at Kestner Waterfront Park are expected to be open by this weekend.

The spring flip also included getting the benches, garbage cans and flowers out in the downtown.

Residents of Houghton are asked to sweep the sand left over from the winter road maintenance to the side of the road and the city will pick it up though the end of the month.

This was a service the city used to provide and now will again so residents do not have to dump it themselves.

Houghton’s citywide spring cleanup begins this Friday.
