MLB
The Detroit Tigers got early home runs from John Hicks and Nicholas Castellanos, but lost to the Chicago Cubs 5-2 yesterday. Francisco Liriano gave up three runs over six innings, and took the loss. Detroit nearly tied the game in the top of the seventh, but José Iglesias was thrown out at the plate while trying to score. The Cubs added two insurance runs off Louis Coleman in the bottom of the seventh.

The Tigers return home to host the Texas Rangers tonight. Matthew Boyd will pitch against Yovani Gallardo. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire had to leave the dugout midway through yesterday’s game, after he was overcome by heat and dehydration. The heat index was 102 degrees at the start of the game. Gardenhire underwent a medical exam as a precaution, but no other problems were found.

The Tigers have designated infielder Dixon Machado for assignment. Machado opened the season as the starting second baseman, and many viewed him as the shortstop of the future. His hitting struggles had forced him to the bench in favor of Niko Goodrum. Because he’s out of options, he can’t be sent directly to Toledo. The team has seven days to trade him, release him, or place him on waivers. If he is waived, and no other team claims him, he could then be assigned to the Mud Hens. The Tigers also sent reliever Warwick Saupold back to Toledo. They brought up infielder Ronny Rodriguez and reliever Victor Alcantara.

The Milwaukee Brewers held off the Minnesota Twins 3-2 yesterday. The Crew benefited from three solo home runs by Travis Shaw, Brad Miller and Nate Orf. Orf’s blow in the seventh inning was his first in the major leagues, and the game-winner. Chase Anderson gave up a run on three hits before leaving in the seventh inning. Minnesota threatened in the ninth against Corey Knebel, who gave up a solo home run, and another long fly ball that Keon Broxton grabbed before it flew over the wall.

The Brewers entertain the Atlanta Braves tonight. Jhoulys Chacín will start against Max Fried.

Twilight League Baseball
In Copper Country Twilight League baseball this evening…
– Dean Kangas-State Farm will play REL-Mohawk Technologies at the Hancock Driving Park.
– Wolverine-Orbit will face Superior National Bank-Stanton at the Stanton field.
Both games begin at 6:30.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers will open the season without running back Aaron Jones. Jones has been suspended for the first two games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He was arrested at a traffic stop in October when he admitted to officers he had been smoking marijuana.

Liberty 5K
At the Liberty 5k Run at Baraga County Lumberjack Days yesterday, Cody Krause earned an easy victory. He finished nearly 45 seconds ahead of Virgil Mongozid. Dona Teijo won the women’s division. Link to full race results here.
