Propane Shortage a “National Crisis”

A propane dealer in the Upper Peninsula says the shortage of propane is a national crisis but he does not believe it is being treated that way. Last year, propane was selling for $1.20 to $1.30 per gallon. This year, it is as much as $7 per gallon if you can get it. Keith Holmes at the Stephenson Marketing Cooperative in Menominee County calls it a crisis that is going to have long term ramifications. Holmes says they are rationing the amount of fuel they are selling to customers. It will cost the company more to sell smaller amounts during deliveries but it ensures that customers will have heat. A state of emergency still exists in Michigan to allow truck drivers more time to deliver fuel. Holmes says companies are going as far as Missouri and even Texas to find propane.
