Central UP Recovering From Ice Storm

While snow and freezing rain forced schools to close in the Copper Country Monday, parts of the Central Upper Peninsula were hammered with a dangerous ice storm.

The weather not only caused school closures in Marquette County and the surrounding areas but the ice also caused widespread power outages.

A half inch of ice was reported in some places, causing large fallen tree limbs and downed power lines.

Warming centers were set up by the American Red Cross and the Marquette County Emergency Management Office.

UPPCO Vice President of Business Development and Communications Brett French said in a statement that repair crews would work through the night and into today to restore power.

Many schools in the Central UP were delayed or closed again today.
