Markkanen Proposes Using Ojibway Correctional Facility As Training Academy

State Representative Greg Markkanen is proposing the closed Ojibway Correctional Facility be repurposed into a training academy for corrections officers.

The House’s corrections budget includes funding to study potential locations for a training academy.

The Hancock Republican proposed an amendment Tuesday to to include the vacant prison in Gogebic County to those under consideration.

“The closure of the Ojibway prison devastated the surrounding communities,” Markkanen said. “Rather than letting the vacant facility continue to deteriorate and turn into a community eyesore, we now have a chance to breathe new life into the building and fulfill the state’s need for a training facility.”

The amended corrections budget passed the House, advancing it to the Senate.
