Obituary: John F. “Jack” Poynter

Chassell: John F. “Jack” Poynter, 69, of Chassell, passed away at his home on Sunday, July 21, 2019 surrounded by his family.

He was born on March 29, 1950 in Howell, Michigan, a son of the late James and Aileen (Sullivan) Poynter.  He graduated from Hancock High School in 1968.  He was a well known and long time business owner in the Copper Country.

He married Cheryl (Cheri) Baakko on May 3, 1969 in Hancock.

Jack was a member of the Range Snowmobile Club, Keweenaw ATV Club, Knights of the Round Table, and Elks Lodge #404.  He enjoyed his Thursday snowmobile rides with the guys, ATV rides, boating, going to the casino, hunting, and camp–where no guns were allowed.  He loved cruising the Copper Country and his vacations in Florida.

Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by his uncle, Max and aunt Dorothy, and his many canine companions.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Cheri; daughters Tammi (Joel) Peterson, Kerri (Tim) Sleeman, and CheriLynn (Scott) Lampinen; grandchildren Derek (Ashley Kela) Peterson, Meghan Peterson, Brooklyn Peterson, Andrew Lampinen, and Paul (Meegan) Johnson, whom he considered a son; mother-in-law, Helen Baakko; brother Tom (Lani) Poynter; sister Sue (Ted) Mitsuno; sister-in-law, Vickie (Dale) Meese; brother-in-law John (Doris) Baakko; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Cremation has taken place as requested by the deceased.  A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Copper Country Humane Society, P.O. Box 453, Houghton, MI 49931 in the name of Jack Poynter.
