Don’t Pass Stopped School Buses With Flashing Lights

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post are reminding drivers that in just a couple of weeks, schools will be back in session.

And with that, there will be an increase in foot, vehicle, and bus traffic in certain areas.

Each year, law enforcement receives numerous complaints regarding illegal school bus passing.

Michigan law requires the drivers to come to a full stop not less than 20 feet from a school bus with its flashing red lights on.

Drivers are not to proceed until the bus resumes motion or the signals are no longer activated.

Failing to properly stop for a school bus while it is loading or unloading is a civil infraction.

Violations can cost $225 and result in three points on your driving record.

Worse, a child’s life could be endangered.
