Calumet Opens Door to Marijuana Businesses

Calumet has become the first municipality in the Copper Country to allow marijuana businesses to operate within its boundaries.

With a large crowd in attendance that was predominantly against the move, the village council passed the marijuana ordinance at its meeting last night with a 4-2 vote.

The ordinance will allow up to five businesses in the village, and will permit retail sale, growing and transport.

Applications can begin to be processed when the ordinance becomes effective in about 45 days, and will need to be accompanied by a non-refundable $5,000 fee.

Applicants must also have a state permit. The state is scheduled to begin accepting applications November 1st.

Trustee Nate Anderson resigned from the council last night. Any resident interested in filling out his term can contact Village Manager Caleb Katz.
