State Senate Approves “Secret Address” Bills

Victims of domestic violence, stalking, sexual abuse and human trafficking could keep their addresses secret under legislation approved unanimously by the Michigan Senate yesterday.

Participants in the program would receive an identification number. Mail intended for them would be sent to a state government address, and then forwarded.

Driver’s licenses and other official ID would carry a message to law enforcement that their address is protected.

State police troopers could access the address database, but would be able to share information with local law enforcement only in emergencies.

The group of seven bills moves on to the State House.
