Whitmer Moves to Raise OT Limits

Governor Gretchen Whitmer wants more Michigan workers to qualify for overtime pay.

The current federal standard was set 15 years ago, and requires that overtime pay be given to those who make less than around $24,000 per year. That level will be raised to around $35,500 on January first.

Whitmer thinks the standard should be higher, and has started the rulemaking process that would enable the state to determine where that figure should be.

She has not offered an exact figure, but has said that a formula proposed by the Obama administration several years ago would be a good place to begin discussions. That formula would put the cap at $51,000.
