State to Expedite Great Lakes Erosion Protection Requests

The State of Michigan is speeding up the process of issuing permits to help Great Lakes property owners fight erosion.

Record high water levels and recent strong storms have caused significant shoreline problems.

The worst issues are along the Lake Michigan coast, where some dune areas have lost as much as 30 feet to the waves. Some shoreline houses have had to be abandoned.

The Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy is assigning more staff to review applications for shoreline protection permits, and hopes to reduce turnaround time to a few days.

EGLE has also launched a new website to provide information to shoreline property owners. Visit it here.
