Calumet Plans Police Hire

The Village of Calumet will continue to run its own police department.

Tuesday night, the village council decided to post a part-time position. Village Manager Caleb Katz told us the new officer will work no more than 30 hours per week, and will be the only one on staff.

The village is also moving forward in its attempt to clean up blighted properties. Katz says notices have begun going out to owners of properties that need repair. The dangerous building ordinance may also come into play. In those extreme cases, if notified owners refuse to take action, the village would have the buildings stabilized, and then bill the owners.

In other action, the village bought a new snow bucket for its loader, and decided to move forward with a federal grant that will assist in purchasing some additional equipment.
