HS Hockey – Kings Tie, ‘Dogs and Jets Fall – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…
– Calumet and Cranbrook Kingswood skated to a 3-3 tie. All the scoring came in the first period. The Copper Kings built a 2-0 lead with goals from Scott Loukus and Dean Loukus, but the Cranes erased it with three straight. Scott Loukus’ second tally of the night tied the contest.
– Hancock lost 6-4 at Escanaba.
Mason Mikesch had two goals for the Bulldogs.
– Jeffers fell to Mosinee 5-3.

Today…
– Calumet hosts Cranbrook again at noon. Our broadcast will begin at 11:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Jeffers welcomes Ashland at 2:00.

In high school boys basketball last night, L’Anse outscored Baraga 64-51.

In girls action last evening…
– Hancock fell to Negaunee 54-36. D’Andra Kero led the Bulldogs with nine points.
– Houghton lost to West Iron County 50-33.
Maryellen Trewhella had 14 points for the Gremlins.
– Chassell shut down Lake Linden-Hubbell 50-28. Paige Sleeman scored 15 for the Panthers.
– Ontonagon outscored Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 64-21.

In high school swimming yesterday, both Houghton teams earned easy victories at Gladstone – the girls 107-55, and the boys 103-24. See full results here.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team will host Algoma University today at 1:00.

The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball entertains Ripon College today.

Great Lakes Hockey League

The Calumet Wolverines doubled up the Portage Lake Pioneers 8-4 last night. Those teams will play again tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings will visit the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. Because of NFL football, coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost their third straight game last night, 114-93 to the Boston Celtics. Thon Maker led Detroit with 15 points. Playing without Reggie Jackson, Blake Griffin, Luke Kennard and Christian Wood, the Pistons committed 25 turnovers.

The Pistons host the Chicago Bulls tonight.

NFL

In the NFL today, the Texans visit the Buccaneers at 1:00, the Bills play at New England at 4:30, and the Rams visit the 49ers at 8:15. We’ll broadcast all those games on 99.3 The Lift.

On Sunday, the Detroit Lions visit the Denver Broncos in a 4:00 game. The Green Bay Packers visit the Minnesota Vikings Monday night. Hear both games on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers have signed pitcher Matt Godley to a minor-league contract. Godley won 15 games for the Diamondbacks in 2018, but struggled last season, and was released by Arizona, and then by Toronto.

Former Tigers’ second baseman Ian Kinsler is retiring as a player. He played for the San Diego Padres last season, and will stay with the team as an advisor.
