Nessel Presses Priest Abuse Investigation

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is vowing to press forward with her investigation into clergy sexual abuse next year.

Nessel released some figures this morning.

Based on her department’s reviews of the Marquette, Gaylord and Grand Rapids Catholic Dioceses, 552 victims have named 270 priests as abusers. 130 cases were opened. Of those cases, around 50 cases have been closed based on the Statute of Limitations or the deaths of the priests involved; 45 cases are actively being investigated; 25 cases have been referred back to the Diocese for other action.

Seven men have been charged. Two priests – Patrick Casey and Brian Stanley – have pleaded guilty.

The A.G.’s office is being assisted by 32 volunteers, who have spent more than 1,400 hours sorting through 5 million paper and electronic records.
