Houghton Police Warn Residents Of Phone Scam

The Houghton Police Department is reminding the public that scam phone calls, are making their way through the city.

The scam calls are being used with the Houghton Police Department phone number, but are not actually being made from Houghton’s PD.

The calls are claiming they’re from the IRS or Social Security Office and that you have an outstanding warrant.

To avoid prosecution, you will then be instructed to purchase gift cards and send them to the address they provide.

The scam callers are also using fictitious officer names.

The Houghton PD is advising residents not to take part in any of this, as police departments never discuss warrants over the phone.

If you receive such a call, please call your local police department.
