Fiber Optic Proposal Approved in Manistique

A proposal to run almost 2 1/2 miles of fiber optic cable through the Hiawatha National Forest in the Upper Peninsula has been approved. The Hiawatha Telephone Company of Munising asked for permission earlier this year to run the cable between Stevens Lake and Gooseneck Lake, roughly 15 miles northwest of Manistique. The decision by Rapid River/Manistique Distrct Ranger, Joanne Sanfilippo to approve the project came after an environmental review was done. The company will either bury the cable underneath the roadway, or attach it to existing poles.
