Law enforcement agencies in the Copper Country and across the state have increased their traffic enforcement activities for the long holiday weekend. Operation C.A.R.E. will run through Sunday. Officers will be watching for impaired driving, seat belt use, careless driving and speeding. The extra patrols are paid for by the federal government, which has granted a quarter-million dollars to the state to cover the costs this year, and for the next two years. Sergeant Jill Gleason of the Michigan State Police Traffic Safety Division says the goal is to reduce crashes and serious injuries by 10 percent by the end of 2016. Last year, a dozen people died on Michigan roads during the Thanksgiving holiday.
