Pistons’ Wood Tests Positive for COVID-19 – Sunday Sports Wrap

With major league sports shut down because of the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, attention turns to employees and contractors who rely on income from those sporting events.

Ilitch Holdings has committed $1 million to providing salaries for 1,500 full and part-time employees at Little Caesars Arena, Comerica Park, the Detroit Tigers’ training facility in Lakeland, Florida, and its other entertainment venues. That will cover about a month’s worth of wages. Food and beverage services at Little Caesars Arena, though, are contracted out to a company called Sportservice, which is not owned by the Ilitches. It is unclear whether they will be paid.

NBA

Detroit Pistons player Christian Wood has been diagnosed with the COVID-19 coronavirus. Wood guarded Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert in a recent game. Gobert was the first NBA player to be confirmed as having the virus. Wood’s agent has confirmed the diagnosis, and the Detroit News that his client “feels 100-percent fine.”

NFL

The Detroit Lions have signed long snapper Don Muhlback for a 17th season. Muhlback has played in 244 games for the Lions – second on Detroit’s career list to kicker Jason Hanson, who played in 327 over 21 seasons.
