Northern Michigan University Urged To Remove Monument With Racist Ties

Should Northern Michigan University remove a monument some believe has racist ties?

A petition has been circulating for the last few days, asking President Fritz Erickson and the school’s Board of Trustees to remove the monument with ties to the apatheid movement in South Africa, which started in 1948, and ended in the early 90’s.

The monument in question consists of two towers and a plaque that bears the names “Mr. and Mrs. John P. McGoff.”

McGoff was an apartheid supporter, who accepted over $11 million from the South African Government, to push a pro-aparthied agenda in the United States.

By doing so, McGoff was later charged by the U.S. Government, for his activities.

Controversy and protests began, after the university accepted $300,000 from McGoff back in 1978.

This caused holocaust survivor Eli Wiesel to back out of a speaking engagement.
