NMU Profs to Vote on New Contract

Northern Michigan University professors are expected to meet this morning to vote on a new contract.

The one-year-deal between the university and its professors’ union came after months of negotiating.

Union representatives have approved it… now it’s up to the rank-and-file.

The contract includes furloughed pay for one day out of each month for professors, which equates to about a 4.6 percent pay deduction. Salaries for summer courses and overload pay also took a drop; depending on salary, a professor would make roughly 50 percent of what they normally would for a four–credit summer class.

Drops in pay come as NMU tries to lessen the financial burden the COVID-19 pandemic imposed.

University professors originally wanted to negotiate for a 5–year contract, but uncertainty surrounding the COVID–19 pandemic led the union to negotiate a short–term deal instead.
