Local Guard Troops Head to Border

Governor Gretchen Whitmer today bade farewell in person to National Guard troops from the local 1431st Engineers, who are beginning a deployment along the Mexican border.

Major General Paul Rogers outlined the mission…

“They’re not involved with law enforcement or any type of detention, but they will be helping to augment and relieve the border patrol staff so that they can move forward and do those kinds of missions. So, it will be sensor operation and logistical support.”

Whitmer said the Guard has been incredible throughout the recent crisis…

“They have done testing, whether inside prisons or congregate care facilities. I can’t imagine how we could have tackled a lot of the challenges that we’ve had without the Guard.”

She praised the Michigan National Guard as among the best in the nation.
