Boost for Local Food Distribution Coming

There’s federal money coming to help local growers deliver food to low income residents in our region.

A $746,480 grant to Michigan State University will be used to strengthen local food economies in the Upper Peninsula, and in Battle Creek.

Jamie Rahrig with the MSU Center for Regional Food System and the MSU Product Center says the cash will expand work done by the Michigan Good Food Fund, which is a public-private partnership that provides loans for entrepreneurs who grow and distribute affordable, healthy food in low-income and underserved communities.

To this point, the Fund has made little, if any, investment in the U.P.

This investment comes through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Regional Food Systems Partnerships Program.
