Millions of dollars has been allocated to help increase access to broadband internet service in the western Upper Peninsula.
The Federal Communications Commission says the buildout will provide nearly all recipients with a minimum speed of 100 megabytes per second down and 20 megs up, with 80 percent of customers getting a download speed of one gigabyte per second.
Over the next 10 years, a consortium of Atlantic Engineering Group and Heron Broadband will receive nearly $20 million for projects in Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon Counties.
Space Exploration Technologies will get $1.3 million for use in Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon Counties. Baraga Telephone Company will receive $444,000 for Houghton County projects.
No timetable for the improvements has been announced.
The money comes from a recent government spectrum auction.
