Houghton County Approves Law Enforcement Labor Contract, Will Try To Sell Former Transfer Site

Houghton County sheriff’s deputies and jail employees have a new contract. The three-year deal was approved by the board of commissioners last night. No details were provided, other than that it runs for three years. Union members had already ratified the deal.

Commissioners also decided to try to sell the site of the former county waste transfer station off Sharon Avenue. Board members Tom Tikkanen and Gretchen Janssen, who are real estate brokers, reviewed the state of the property…

“The location is fantastic. That’s where the real value lies. The building itself is deteriorating, and that takes a lot of the value away.”

It was also noted that there is an old mine shaft below the property that has caused some instability. Janssen and Tikkanen recommended that the county offer the parcel for sale with a minimum bid of $30,000, and the full commission agreed.
