Little Brothers planning Easter meals

Easter meals will be available for those who spend the holiday alone. Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly of Upper Michigan is keeping in place safety precautions that allowed it to deliver Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners across the Copper Country late last year, which means the help it is requesting looks a little different compared to traditional needs. Executive Director Cathy Kass-Aten says ham, mashed potatoes, various desserts, and plenty of sides have to be bought, rather than donated.

Because of COVID-19 guidelines, we’re trying to limit donations of food coming into our building, so financial support is a huge need for us for this.

The meals are available to people 60 or over and will be delivered between noon and 2:00 PM. Drivers are always appreciated, but Kass-Aten is expecting the hardest role to fill will be for the food preparers. They begin cooking at 8:00 AM and it’s a demanding task. Safety guidelines limit the number of people that can be involved.

There was no Easter meal last year because of the onset of the pandemic. Kass-Aten says that experience reinforced how vital her organization is to the community.

We hear so much back from them how important the meals are. It’s important to all of us too because it is an opportunity for the volunteers in our community to get out and do something and have some limited contact with people. So, it means so much to our elderly friends, and really our community in general.
