Pancake breakfast serves up over $1,000 for Omega House

The Finlandia Student Nurses Association brought back its annual pancake breakfast fundraiser Saturday with impressive results. The meal was cooked up at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on Quincy Street in Hancock until noon, utilizing a curbside pick-up model. In addition to flapjacks, there were sausages and cereal served.

Over $1,000 was raised for Houghton’s Omega House, an assisted living facility on the city’s west side. Association President Madelyn Ball says planning for Saturday’s breakfast dates back to the beginning of the semester.

We began planning in late January. We always try to put this on every year, so we know it’s coming, but real planning begins January, February.

Besides the food, organizers held raffles throughout the morning. Ball runs through the different prizes.

We had a toy set from K.C. Bonkers worth $150, Grace and Gather from downtown donated $50, Rhythm donated a couple t-shirts and we got gift cards from Gino’s Restaurant, Econofoods, Northwoods Sporting Goods. We also had cool things like paintings and masks made from Sew Irresistible.

Omega House never turns away a resident for inability to pay. That is only possible thanks to fundraising efforts like Saturday’s.
