Obituary: Florence Dorothy Carlson Naumes

As received from the Memorial Chapel & Plowe Funeral Homes:

Florence Dorothy Carlson Naumes, 96, beloved Mother, Grandmother (Gram), and Great Grandmother (Double GaGa) passed away into the loving arms of Jesus May 17, 2021.

Florence was born on March 14, 1925 in Chassell, Michigan. She was the youngest of 7 children born to Anna Matilda and C.G. Carlson. Florence graduated from Chassell High School in 1942. She moved to Chicago, Illinois after graduation and worked for Banker’s Life and Casualty and then Montgomery Ward Headquarters in downtown Chicago. She married Norbert Henry Naumes on October 4, 1947. On January 17, 1950 their first child Mary Kay was born. She tragically passed away the day after her birth from collapsed lungs. On January 20, 1953 their second child Kathleen Marie was born. Her husband Norbert passed away unexpectedly in July 1955, leaving Florence a widow at 30 years old. Florence moved back to Chassell with her daughter in 1958 to take care of her ailing mother and later her father. She was a devout member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where she participated in many activities and served on Church Council. Florence was a caregiver to so many, a kind and gentle woman with a heart of gold. She had many dear friends and colleagues. Florence was a proud member of the VFW Auxiliary in Chassell, a Brownie leader and tireless volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She worked as an assistant to Jean Hill, the Tupperware distributor for the U.P. and then for over 25 years for Detroit and Northern Savings and Loan. She started her career there as a teller and worked her way up through the years to VP of Savings.

She leaves behind to remember her love, grace and strength, her daughter: Kathleen Vertanen, Grandchildren: Rich (Michelle) Vertanen, Joel (Amy) Vertanen, and Jill (Josh) Geric. Great grandchildren: Charlotte Geric (8), Kenzie Geric (6), Colette Vertanen (4), Brooks Vertanen (4) and Brady Vertanen (2).

Florence is preceded in death by infant daughter Mary Kay Naumes, Husband Norbert Naumes, Son in law Darrel Vertanen, Sisters: Linnea Wolter (Roy), Margaret Carlson, Violet Beltonen (George) and Brothers: Harry Carlson (Dolly), George Carlson, Donald Carlson (Margie), and Nieces and Nephews: Robert Wolter, Michael Carlson, Pat Carlson, Carlos Koski, Valerie Koski, David Mikkola, and Jason Mikkola.

Special thanks to Dan & Connie Foote for their special care of Florence at Hubbell Haven and the staff at Darby Glen Nursing Home in Hilliard, Ohio. Also special thanks to those who continued to remember her with cards, prayers, and well wishes through all the years she was away from home, including the VFW Auxiliary and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. She loved the Copper Country and Chassell.

A graveside service will take place in July at the Chassell Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made in her name to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Chassell, Michigan, 49916.

Rest in Peace God’s Angel! We will forever love you.
