The Howl-O-Scream getting ready to go bump in the night

Meadowbrook Arena in L’Anse will be transformed over the next couple weeks into the town of Meadowevil. Friday and Saturday nights starting October 8th are sure to bring the screams out again as the Copper Country’s biggest haunted house comes to life.

L’Anse Hockey Association Treasurer Polly Schaefer says the organization can always use volunteers.

During the haunt, it takes about 30 volunteers a night to pull it off.

Putting everything up is a challenge. Pulling it down, even moreso.

It takes about 30 days to erect a haunted house, and it comes down in about one to two days.

The work is worth the effort. It costs about $22,000 a month to operate the rink and the Howl-O-Scream Haunted House raises roughly half of the overall utility bill for the entire winter. Open rinks, figure skating clubs, several adult hockey teams, and more use the facility that Schaefer says was just a roof and tarp walls back in the 80’s when she first started going there.
