Worker shortage focus of intense study

Michigan Tech School of Business and Economics Professor Gary Campbell says few subjects are drawing more interest right now than the struggle of companies to find new workers.

Campbell says it will be a fascinating situation to watch unfold if you are not involved. He warns that it may prove a boon for employees in the short run, but once businesses are able to adjust he expects workers to be hurt over a longer timeframe.

Of course that will force employers to find ways to not use people, which means the jobs may go away.

The United States Department of Labor estimates that there are over 10 million open jobs that businesses are trying to fill nationwide. Locally, entry level jobs are being advertised with a starting wage of up to $14 per hour.
