Portage Lake Library tax assistance program event canceled by AARP

The COVID-19 pandemic is putting a popular financial assistance program on ice again this year. It’s almost tax season and the Portage Lake District Library commonly offers assistance to filers in conjunction with the AARP.

With that off the table, the main branch is moving to ensure that significant resources will be available for those who are preparing returns on their own. Program Coordinator Michael Stanitis says several computers will be reserved for working on taxes. Staff cannot assist on returns but they will be able to address any questions someone may have about e-filing. For those printing out physical copies, the first ten pages are free.

Students from the Michigan Tech School of Business traditionally offer help through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program. It is available to community members as well as students, faculty, and staff, and has been in place for nearly 30 years. Keweenaw Report has an inquiry in as to whether the program will be occurring this year. An update, along with other options, will be published at a later date.
