Baraga snowmobile trails stuck waiting on the white stuff

Baraga County Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Barbara McEwen says the area’s snowmobile scene is still stuck in neutral. Unlike the rest of the Keweenaw, Baraga has not recovered from the warmth in the middle of December. McEwen says several trails were still well below what is needed to operate sleds on as of this past Tuesday.

Even having the highest elevation in the state was of no help.

Groomers continue to do maintenance work and Wednesday’s snowstorm is providing much needed relief. The county has three machines operated by 10 different drivers, most in a part-time capacity. McEwen says a base of around 18 inches is needed before snowmobile trails are usable.
