MDOT Warns Against Ignoring Road Closures

The Michigan Department of Transportation says that it’s aware of people going around the barricades when M-28 and other roads in the Upper Peninsula have been closed this winter.

M-DOT spokesman Dan Weingarten in Ishpeming says that roads are closed only when absolutely necessary and people need to obey the closures.

He says you can also be risking your life when you drive on roads that have been closed.

M-28 has been closed eight times this winter between Munising and Marquette because of whiteout conditions. During the Valentines weekend storm, portions of US-2, M-35, and US-41 were also closed for hours in Delta, Schoolcraft, and Alger Counties.

Weingarten says the road closures are put in place for the safety of drivers and the people who are out taking care of the roads. He says that road closures are frustrating, but people are breaking the law when they disobey them and police will issue tickets.
